While museums preserve the past, they are also searching for new ways to engage with the future. This involves leveraging technology to make culture and design accessible for a wider audience. The LAB educates, inspires, and empowers individuals through design by employing various perspectives. This project aims to help the public better understand the concepts that ultimately lead to the creation of a design by enabling them to manipulate 3D objects. This also allows engineers and deisgners to gain insight on minute details that may not be otherwise observable.

Cooper Hewitt is the only museum in the United States devoted to historical and contemporary design, from human crafts to modern tech. Their mission is to educate, inspire and empower people through design.

While the local museum service is considered the core experience, the online digital service plays an important role in allowing visitors to learn more both before and after their trip to the museum.

I experienced the entire journey several times with a group of people and took notes on their changing emotions and behaviors.

Key Takeaways:

1. Visitors are enthralled by the interactive and immersive digital technologies. They also appreciate the trip retrieve system

2. However, visitors do not seem to truly enjoy reading notes and or taking pictures relative to how much they enjoyed the 3D designs

Persona

I interviewed a group of visitors and created 3 personas. They have different needs for quality, quantity, and categories of information. In general, they expect to have a better way to attain information for the objects they encounter.

I chose the persona of Designer Melodie as my main user.

Pain Point: Users cannot get the entire picture of the 3D objects because they are unable to view the object from distinct angles.

Solution: We can take advantage of the interactive tablet in the museum (Insight) to overcome this gap

Introduction

This led to the creation of my idea: The LAB.

A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is a 3D capture worth? An interactive 3D capture is a virtual representation of a physical object that you can see from every angle on the tablet or your computer,  This helps in learning and understanding through the manipulation of a 3D object. On The LAB, you are can access a disintegrated view and add annotations to highlight specific details, making the experience even more interactive.

Understand Object Functionality

On The LAB, you also have have the ability to view information regarding the construction, components and functions of the object itself.

Create a Community

You are free to take notes, add annotations to highlight specific details, as well as view the annotations from others, making the experience community-oriented. There also exists an online platform, which is used to circulate information.
